Understanding Discrepancies Between Train Booking Dates and Electronic Ticket Dates

When planning a train journey, especially across different time zones, travelers may encounter some perplexing issues related to booking details and electronic tickets. Recently, I experienced this firsthand and hope to share my insights so others can avoid unnecessary confusion and save valuable time during their travel preparations.

The Issue at Hand

The core problem arises when the departure date displayed during the booking process differs from the date shown on the electronic ticket generated afterward. This discrepancy became evident on platforms such as Comboios de Portugal and Morocco’s ONCF.

For instance, I booked a train departing in the afternoon, after midday, on the 12th of the month. While the booking confirmation clearly indicated the 12th as the travel date, the electronic ticket—accessible via mobile app or website—displayed the departure date as the 13th. This inconsistency led to confusion: which date was correct? Could this mismatch cause issues when boarding the train?

The frustration was compounded by the difficulty in obtaining definitive answers directly from the train operators, as their customer support channels primarily consisted of automated chatbots with limited scope for resolution.

Uncovering the Cause

After extensive experimentation, I identified that the root of the issue is related to time zone settings on the device viewing the ticket. Since electronic tickets often rely on the device’s system time zone to present dates and times, differences in time zone settings can result in display inconsistencies.

My specific situation was due to being in New Zealand, which is 12 hours ahead of Lisbon, Portugal. When I booked the ticket for an afternoon departure in Lisbon (local time), my device’s default time zone was set to New Zealand time. Consequently, the ticket’s date appeared as the next day, the 13th, reflecting the device’s local time rather than the departure location’s time zone.

Adjusting the Time Zone for Clarity

To verify this hypothesis, I changed my device’s time zone setting from New Zealand to Lisbon’s local time. Upon doing so, the electronic ticket correctly displayed the departure date as the 12th, matching the original booking details.

This experience underscores an important point: the most reliable reference for the actual travel date and time is the local date and time at the departure location. Travelers booking from different time zones need to be aware of this nuance to avoid potential mix-ups.

Practical Recommendations

  • Be mindful of your device’s time zone settings when reviewing electronic tickets, especially
