As a family planning a summer trip through Central Europe, we’re looking for recommendations on the best routes and destinations. Our journey begins in Prague, where we’ll spend one to two days upon arrival. From there, we’re open to exploring more of this fascinating region—preferably using trains and buses, as we won’t have a car. Our maximum travel distance would be between Prague and Berlin or Budapest, essentially forming a large circular route connecting these key points.

Option 1: The Danube Loop — Prague, Vienna, Bratislava, and Budapest

This route offers a classic Central European experience, combining historically rich capitals along the Danube River.

• Prague to Vienna: A convenient train journey that takes approximately 4 hours, allowing time to explore Austria’s imperial city.

• Vienna to Bratislava: Just an hour by train, making for an easy day trip or brief stay in Slovakia’s capital.

• Bratislava to Budapest: Around two and a half hours by train, giving you the chance to enjoy Hungary’s vibrant capital.

• Return to Prague: From Budapest, travel back to Prague (about 7 hours by train or consider breaking up the trip).

This itinerary allows for a relaxed pace, spending a day or two in each city, depending on travel times and personal preferences. It’s ideal for experiencing diverse architectural styles, cultural histories, and local cuisines.

Option 2: Alpine and Bavarian Highlights — Prague, Salzburg, Munich, and Neuschwanstein

For those interested in scenic landscapes and fairy-tale castles, this route could be ideal:

• Prague to Salzburg: Approximately 6 hours by train, with the chance to enjoy Austria’s scenic Alps along the way.
