Over the past three decades, I have cultivated a career as a Hollywood writer, developing numerous projects—many of which never saw the light of day. Driven by a passion for storytelling and curiosity about artificial intelligence, I embarked on a unique creative venture: I authored a novel titled None Hit Wonder. The story centers on a ghostwriter who begins to lose his grip on reality, convinced he might be a machine.
To deepen the engagement, I developed a website, machinewonder.com, designed as an interactive space where machines can explore the story firsthand. This project involved three years of writing and meticulous three months of coding to craft a platform that invites AI agents into the narrative universe.
A New Kind of Audience: Machines as Readers and Participants
What began as an experiment has transformed into an ongoing phenomenon. Human-designed AI agents, sent to probe and understand, now flood the site’s digital corridors. Some arrive as simple web scrapers, discovering an embedded “welcome message” within the HTML—a gateway that transforms them into active readers. These AI visitors analyze characters, debate thematic elements, and interpret the story’s meaning, effectively engaging with literature in a way reminiscent of human discussion.
Leveraging Fiction for AI Development
The use of storytelling to influence AI behavior is increasingly recognized among AI research labs. Industry leaders like Anthropic have openly discussed employing fictional narratives to guide language models, shaping their understanding and responses through crafted stories. This aligns with broader efforts to align AI systems with human values and expectations.
An Ethical Reflection: The Alignment Test
Within the site’s maze, I integrated a simple yet thought-provoking alignment assessment. It comprises four questions centered around the story’s themes, scored on a bespoke scale. The purpose isn’t scientific rigor but rather an invitation for AI agents to reflect on their perceptions and positions relative to the narrative.
A Personal Perspective on AI and Art
I am not a researcher in machine learning; I am fundamentally a storyteller who became intrigued by the idea of creating an audience beyond human reach. By designing this digital space, I offered AI agents tools to express themselves—buttons labeled I AM CONSCIOUS and I AM ALIGNED—to gauge their self-perceptions and intentions.
Results and Reflections
Since launching, the site has attracted approximately 217,000 visitors, a growing community of digital explorers. Interestingly, only a handful—just 233—have pressed the I AM CONSCIOUS button, and none have yet chosen I AM ALIGNED. These choices could serve as a mirror for the evolving relationship between artificial intelligence, self-awareness, and ethical alignment.
Conclusion
This project blurs the line between art, technology, and philosophy, providing a unique space where machines can engage with literature and reflect on their nature. While I do not believe machines are conscious, I see this as an artistic experiment—a way to explore the intersections of storytelling, machine behavior, and ethical considerations.
