My Personal Experience Traveling in France: An Honest Reflection
Traveling can often broaden our horizons and deepen our understanding of diverse cultures. However, personal experiences during such journeys can vary greatly, and sharing these stories helps paint a more comprehensive picture. Recently, I had the opportunity to explore France alongside my wife, visiting major cities such as Paris, Nice, and Lyon over the course of a week. While each destination had its unique charm, my time in Paris left a particularly strong impression—one that was unfortunately tinged with disappointment and discomfort.
Initial Impressions and Cultural Encounters
From the outset, I approached our trip to Paris with respect and preparation. We learned some basic French phrases, made an effort to communicate politely, and dressed appropriately for our outings. Despite these efforts, we encountered an environment that felt unwelcoming. I observed that even minor mistakes in language or behavior seemed to elicit cold or dismissive reactions from locals. Unlike Mexico, where hospitality toward foreigners is generally warm and accommodating, the experience in Paris was markedly different. We felt a subtle but persistent sense of hostility that was difficult to ignore.
Challenges in Hospitality and Social Interactions
The difficulties extended to our experiences in restaurants and nightlife venues. Our attire did not seem to influence these reactions; rather, it appeared to stem from an undercurrent of discrimination.
Nightlife venues showed similar patterns—many refused us entry under the pretext of “private parties,” but it was evident that they preferred to admit locals or Parisians. These encounters created a sense of alienation that overshadowed our enjoyment of the city.
A Confrontation and an Unsettling Incident
The most distressing moment of our trip occurred after visiting a Decathlon store, where we had spent approximately 500 euros on shopping. As we exited, a woman around 50 years old fixated her gaze on us with hostility before verbally confronting us with questions about our origins and telling us to “go back to our country.” Her words quickly escalated into aggression, culminating in her physically striking my wife in the face. I immediately intervened to pull her back, but to
