Discovering the Charm of Interlaken, Switzerland: A Memorable Weekend Getaway

Introduction

Embarking on a study abroad experience offers a wealth of opportunities for cultural immersion, personal growth, and adventure. One highlight of my recent semester was an unforgettable weekend in Interlaken, Switzerland—a picturesque town nestled between alpine peaks and renowned for its adventure sports and scenic beauty. If you’re considering a visit, or simply crave a mountain escape, read on for insights and tips from my journey.

Travel Planning and Arrival

My adventure began with a flight from Brussels to Zurich, followed by a scenic train ride to Interlaken. Purchasing train tickets directly from the railway company proved cost-effective, as third-party vendors often add unnecessary charges—a consideration worth noting when traveling in expensive countries like Switzerland. The train journey itself was a visual feast, offering sweeping views of the Swiss landscape and setting the tone for the weekend ahead.

Getting Acquainted with Interlaken

Upon arriving at Interlaken West station, I was immediately captivated by the sight of paragliders soaring overhead—an iconic symbol of the town’s adventurous spirit. The town’s charming streets and stunning mountain backdrop make it an ideal base for outdoor activities and relaxation alike.

Activities and Experiences

Interlaken is renowned for its outdoor pursuits, and our group took full advantage. We went hiking through scenic trails, kayaked on pristine lakes, and even tried paragliding—an exhilarating experience, albeit one I opted out of due to a fear of heights. The kayaking tour was especially memorable, guided by a friendly instructor from Belgium—highlighting the international community that makes Interlaken so special.

While we immersed ourselves in active pursuits, it’s worth noting that advanced planning is advisable for more popular activities. For instance, I recommend booking a trip to Grindelwald for après-ski refinement. Unfortunately, we missed out on this due to timing constraints, as the last lift down is typically around 3 pm. If I return, allocating time for this experience would be high on my list.

Culinary Delights and Nightlife

No Swiss weekend would be complete without indulging in local cuisine. We ended our evenings with authentic fondue and refreshing Aperol spritzes—perfect for warming up after a day in the mountains. These culinary moments added a delightful touch to our adventure and exemplify the cozy, welcoming atmosphere of Interlaken.
