Exploring Hungary Beyond Budapest: A Travel Guide to Hidden Gems in the East
When planning a trip to Hungary, many travelers gravitate toward Budapest’s iconic sights—Buda Castle, the Parliament Building, thermal baths, and vibrant nightlife. While the capital city offers a rich cultural experience, venturing beyond Budapest can unveil a less trodden, truly authentic side of Hungary. During a recent three-week European journey, I had the opportunity to explore the eastern regions of Hungary by car, visiting charming towns and national parks. I highly recommend travelers allocate time to discover these lesser-known destinations for a slower pace, scenic beauty, and genuine encounters with local culture.
Eger: A Historical Wine & Castle Town
Nestled in a picturesque valley, Eger is renowned for its vibrant wine culture and historical landmarks. The Valley of the Beautiful Women is a must-visit; this bustling square is lined with approximately twenty cozy wine bars and a few restaurants. Sampling local wines here is both affordable and delightful—ideal for an afternoon of leisurely tasting. Nearby, Eger Castle offers panoramic views over the city. The castle’s history, which includes successfully defending against Ottoman invaders, adds a fascinating layer for history enthusiasts. In the heart of town, Dobo Istvan Square, the Cathedral Basilica of St. John, and the Minaret are easily walkable, providing scenic spots for strolling and photography.
Lillafüred: An Idyllic Nature Retreat
Lillafüred, situated amidst lush forests, promises outdoor adventures and tranquil scenery. While some paths may be challenging for individuals with mobility issues, the area boasts numerous hiking trails and lakeside activities. Rent a boat on the lake or explore the stunning Terraces Gardens and Hotel Palota—both perfect for capturing stunning photos. The gardens lead seamlessly into the charming town of Lillafüred, though hilly terrain warrants caution for some visitors. A highlight was the forest train ride through the woods, offering an immersive experience in Hungary’s natural beauty. For the more adventurous, the cable car ride at the top of the hills provides breathtaking views, especially when descending down mountain biking trails—though we opted for just the ascent and descent for a more relaxed experience.
Tiszafüred: A Peaceful Lakeside Escape
Our stay near Tiszafüred was highlighted by a memorable boat tour of the lake. Local innkeepers helped arrange a leisurely hour-long ride aboard a flat-top boat, which took us to a small
