Exploring the Upper Middle Rhine and Moselle Valleys: A Solo Adventure by Public Transport (May 2025)
Introduction
Traveling through Germany’s iconic river valleys offers a blend of stunning scenery, historic towns, and charming castles. In May 2025, I embarked on a solo journey through the Upper Middle Rhine Valley and Moselle Valley, utilizing public transportation to explore these scenic regions. This blog post shares my detailed itinerary, insights, and recommendations for fellow travelers considering this adventure.
Why Choose This Region?
The Upper Middle Rhine and Moselle Valleys are renowned for their picturesque landscapes, medieval castles, and quaint towns. My primary goal was relaxation—enjoying scenic hikes, wandering old town streets, and soaking in the atmosphere without the rush of ticking off every attraction. Starting in Boppard, a strategic base with access to regional trains and the added perk of a free VRM train ticket, I was able to explore efficiently and sustainably.
Accommodation & Staying Connected
I stayed at Hotel Garni Günther in Boppard, which offered a cozy balcony room overlooking the Rhine River. While the decor was a bit dated, it provided all essentials and was spotlessly clean. Evening relaxation often involved enjoying the sunset from the balcony or strolling along the riverside promenade. Note that trains running on the opposite bank can be heard at night, but once asleep, it wasn’t disruptive.
Dining Experience
During my stay, most lunches were casual, eaten at open establishments I happened upon, given the early season. Dinner options in Boppard were somewhat limited, but the following restaurants stood out:
- Keltenschmaus: A popular steakhouse requiring reservations; the food was good, though not extraordinary.
- Severus Stube: A local favorite offering hearty regional cuisine; I recommend booking ahead.
- Osteria In Piazza: An Italian restaurant I frequented, thanks to my love for Italian dishes.
Transportation: Navigating Between Destinations
Public transport was my primary mode of travel, predominantly train journeys, supplemented by the KD ferry to Koblenz. During instances where attractions like Stolzenfels Castle were closed, the ferry provided an alternative route. I used the Deutsche Bahn app to streamline connections, making train and bus schedules straightforward to follow.
Top Sightseeing Tips & Highlights
For a well-rounded experience, I recommend allocating around three days, focusing on these key locations:
- Bacharach – A must-visit for its charming
