I have 5 days in May 2026 with my wife before a course in Krk, Croatia. She’s leaning toward Italy. We went in 2018 and there’s still so much left to explore (and eat!). Any suggestions for two food lovers?

Exploring the Culinary and Cultural Gems of Italy: A 5-Day Itinerary for Food Enthusiasts in May 2026
Planning a memorable European getaway often revolves around discovering exceptional cuisine, charming neighborhoods, and breathtaking landscapes. If you’re considering a five-day adventure in Italy or Croatia with your spouse—especially if your travels are fueled by a passion for authentic, world-class food—this guide offers insights and suggestions to craft an unforgettable experience.
Reflecting on Past Culinary Adventures
Our previous journey in 2018 set a high culinary bar. We invested 29 days exploring Europe’s rich gastronomic tapestry, from dining at the renowned El Celler de Can Roca in Girona to savoring the subtle flavors of Modena’s balsamic vinegar and Parmesan cheese. Small medieval streets, warm local atmospheres, and exceptional dining experiences characterized these destinations, shaping our travel philosophy: prioritize good food intertwined with authentic ambiance over overly touristy hotspots.
Highlights from Our Past Trip
Girona, Spain – A Charming Culinary Haven
One of our standout destinations was Girona. Wandering its historic, cobblestone streets, sampling local delicacies, and soaking up the relaxed vibe made it a highlight of our journey. The city’s intimate character and stellar food scene continue to resonate with us.
Modena, Italy – A Foodie’s Paradise
Though we missed out on a reservation at Osteria Francescana, our time in Modena was still extraordinary. We explored the Ferrari Museum, indulged in local balsamic vinegar and Parmesan tastings, and enjoyed farm-to-table dinners at an agriturismo. These immersive experiences deeply enriched our appreciation for Italian culinary craftsmanship.
Other Memorable Stops
Pisa – A brief, serendipitous stop
While Pisa didn’t leave a lasting impression beyond its iconic Leaning Tower, we did discover a fantastic burger joint that provided a satisfying casual meal midway through our Italy adventure.
Riomaggiore and Manarola in Cinque Terre – Spectacular coastal beauty
These colorful seaside villages enchanted us with their stunning vistas, authentic charm, and delightful local flavors. They exemplify the kind of unspoiled destinations we seek—places where scenic beauty and culture seamlessly blend.
