Planning a Memorable European Adventure with Teens: A 2027 Summer Itinerary

Embarking on a family journey through Europe with teenagers requires thoughtful planning to balance leisure, culture, and convenience—especially when relying on public transportation. As a Canadian family with teenagers approaching 17 and 14 years old, we’ve charted a tentative 14- to 16-day itinerary for summer 2027. Having previously explored France and Italy with great success, we’re now excited to venture into Germany, Slovenia, Croatia, and Switzerland. Here, I share our preliminary plans and invite feedback from fellow travelers and enthusiasts.

Travel Overview

  • Duration: Approximately 14-16 days
  • Participants: 2 adults, daughter (17), her boyfriend (17), and son (14)
  • Transportation: Public transit (trains, buses)
  • Focus: Cultural experiences, relaxation, and family-friendly activities

German Chapter: Munich (3 Days)

Our journey begins in Munich, a city rich in history and lively culture. We plan to spend three days exploring:

  • Bayern’s FC Arena: A must-visit for our football fan son.
  • Science Museum: Interactive exhibits perfect for teenagers.
  • Traditional Beer Garden: Embracing local customs and flavor.

Additional consideration: Should we visit Neuschwanstein Castle? Known for inspiring Walt Disney’s fairy tale castle, it’s a popular destination nearby. We’re curious if it’s accessible via public transportation. From what we’ve researched, it’s reachable by regional train and bus, making it a feasible half-day trip without organized tour packages. Your insights are welcome!

Slovenia: Ljubljana (2 Days)

Next, we plan to take a train from Munich to Ljubljana, the charming capital of Slovenia, for a two-day relaxing stop. Our activities here will focus on:

  • Enjoying local coffee and wine cafes.
  • Walking the picturesque streets and capturing photos.
  • Experiencing the city’s vibrant atmosphere.

This break allows us to unwind before heading southward.

Croatia: Split (7 Days)

From Ljubljana, we’ll travel by bus or train to Split, Croatia, spending a week at the beach. Our focus is on:

  • Swimming, snorkeling, and relaxing by the Adriatic Sea.
  • Taking boat trips to nearby islands, especially Hvar, which is popular among teens.
  • Exploring local markets and ancient sites.

While Split looks appealing, we are contemplating whether to base ourselves
