Cautionary Tale: A Disappointing Experience with ‘Wonderful Italy’ Accommodation in Lake Como

When traveling, especially to renowned destinations like Lake Como, Italy, travelers expect a certain standard of professionalism and accountability from their accommodation providers. Unfortunately, my recent experience with a property booked through Wonderful Italy did not meet these expectations, and I feel compelled to share my insights to help future guests avoid similar frustrations.

Booking and Check-In Challenges

I reserved a two-night stay at “Varenna Balcony,” scheduled from October 6th to 8th, 2025. According to the listing, check-in was available from 3:00 pm onwards. However, my experience at the start of my trip was far from smooth. Despite multiple attempts to contact the host for the access code, I only received it at 4:23 pm—over an hour late. During this period, I was left waiting outside with two large suitcases, feeling anxious and exhausted, which negatively impacted the beginning of my holiday.

This delay not only disrupted my plans but also set a disappointing tone for the rest of my stay. When I addressed the issue with the host, I was met with silence: no apology, no acknowledgment of the inconvenience, and a persistent claim that they had already sent the code. The timestamped records clearly contradicted this, revealing a lack of transparency and accountability on their part.

Lack of Customer Support and Resolution

Seeking compensation for the inconvenience, I contacted Expedia—the booking platform. Unfortunately, my efforts proved futile, as the platform directed me back to the host, who remained unresponsive. This failure to provide support or resolution highlighted a broader concern regarding guest protection and communication quality.

The Accommodation Experience

While the location of Varenna Balcony was ideal—central and convenient—the internal experience left much to be desired:

  • Space: Adequate for a solo traveler, offering a decent amount of room.
  • Cleanliness: The most significant issue was the pervasive, unpleasant odor—reminiscent of stale urine—in the living room and kitchen areas. The smell was so strong that it made it uncomfortable to linger inside these spaces, forcing me to hold my breath during brief encounters.

Final Thoughts

This experience underscores the importance of professionalism, responsiveness, and accountability in hospitality services. Guests deserve timely communication, genuine customer support, and accommodations that meet basic cleanliness standards. Unfortunately, my encounter with Wonderful Italy and their associated property, Varenna
