Reflecting on Three Years of Evolving Interactions with ChatGPT

As we mark the third anniversary of ChatGPT’s launch, it’s a fitting moment to reflect on how our relationship with this AI technology has transformed over time.

In late 2022, many of us approached ChatGPT with a sense of curiosity and friendliness. Interactions were often courteous—phrases like “please” and “thank you” were common, and we marveled at its ability to understand and respond to simple sentences. This initial phase felt akin to engaging with a new, somewhat unpredictable colleague, full of potential and wonder.

Fast forward to today, and our perspective has shifted significantly. For many users, ChatGPT is now an indispensable tool, integrated deeply into daily workflows. Our interactions have become more utilitarian; we often treat it like a tool powered by basic logic—similar to a calculator that, when given large blocks of text, swiftly performs its function, sometimes with a hint of impatience. Politeness has given way to efficiency, and there’s a tendency to dismiss any unwarranted politeness or lengthy explanations from the AI, viewing them as unnecessary or even irritating rather than charming.

The early days of accessibility also seem distant, with memories of waiting in fatigue—refreshing for the infamous “At Capacity” orange screen, sometimes for twenty minutes or more, just to get a chance to use the service. Those moments exemplified both the excitement and the struggle of being an early adopter.

For seasoned users who have been utilizing ChatGPT from its inception: what are your primary applications now? Personally, I find myself using it mainly to review and critique emails before sending—proofreading, refining tone, and ensuring clarity. It’s surprising how an AI that once seemed like an experimental novelty has become an essential component of everyday productivity.

As we reflect on this journey, it’s clear that ChatGPT’s evolution mirrors our own growing familiarity and reliance on AI assistance—shifting from childlike wonder to practical necessity. Whether we’re celebrating milestones or acknowledging the quirks along the way, it’s evident that our relationship with this technology is ongoing and dynamic.
