Introducing Matchya: An Innovative AI-Powered Mental Health App for Experiential Therapy

In recent months, I have been exploring the potential of AI to support mental health practices, utilizing tools like ChatGPT to simulate various therapy styles such as Internal Family Systems (IFS), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and parts work. This journey revealed valuable insights about the strengths and limitations of AI in therapeutic contexts.

While ChatGPT excels at encouraging self-reflection through open-ended dialogue, it often falls short when it comes to delivering structured, session-like interactions that mirror real therapy sessions. Challenges include maintaining session structure, managing context over multiple exchanges, and seamlessly switching between different therapeutic approaches.

To address these gaps, I developed Matchya—a uniquely interactive AI-driven mental health companion designed to facilitate real-time, voice-based therapy sessions across various styles.

What Is Matchya?

Matchya is an innovative application that guides users through different therapy modalities—be it CBT, IFS, ACT, journaling, grounding techniques, or personalized approaches—via natural, conversational voice sessions. This platform eliminates the need for long prompts or unstructured chats, providing a more immersive and structured experience similar to working with a professional therapist.

The Inspiration Behind Matchya

While AI tools like ChatGPT have proven invaluable for self-reflection and thought exploration, they often present certain limitations that hinder their effectiveness as standalone therapy aids. Common challenges include:

  • Loss of session structure over time
  • The necessity to repeatedly rewrite prompts to refine responses
  • Responses that tend to be overly agreeable or non-committal
  • Difficulty maintaining context across sessions
  • Lack of flexibility in switching between different therapeutic styles
  • Absence of options for personalized or customized therapy approaches

Recognizing these issues, I designed Matchya to enhance the therapeutic experience by providing consistent, structured, and flexible AI conversations in a conversational voice format.

Your Feedback Matters

As I continue to improve Matchya, I would love to hear from the community:

  • Which therapy-style prompts resonate most with you?
  • What do you feel AI-based mental health tools currently lack?
  • Would you prefer engaging with a therapist via voice rather than text for reflection and guidance?
  • Are there features or functionalities you’d like to see implemented?
