Exploring Italy’s Vibrant Cocktail Scene: A Review of Rome and Florence’s Finest Bars and Amaro Tastings
Travel offers a wonderful opportunity to immerse oneself in the local culture, cuisine, and especially the vibrant bar scenes that each city has to offer. During our November 2025 trip to Italy, specifically Rome and Florence, we enthusiastically explored a variety of cocktail establishments, with a particular focus on amaro, Italy’s beloved herbal liqueur. In this article, we share insights into our experiences at several notable bars, highlighting their unique atmospheres, signature drinks, and the opportunities for amaro tasting and shopping.
Rome: A Mix of Elegance, Innovation, and Tradition
Our Roman itinerary included a diverse selection of venues—each delivering a distinct experience.
Il Marchese
Our gastronomic journey in Rome began with lunch at Il Marchese, an establishment known for its refined ambiance. While they did not have an amaro menu, we requested a tasting after our meal. The attentive staff customized a flight of four amaros based on our preferences, explaining each selection’s background. It’s advisable to call ahead if a more comprehensive tasting is desired, as walk-in options may be limited during busy hours.
Enoteca Constantini
For those interested in acquiring quality amaro, Enoteca Constantini proved to be an excellent destination. Located near Il Marchese, this wine shop boasts an extensive selection—our purchases included Amaro Dente Di Leone, Jefferson, Amara Rossa, and Amaro Formidabile. To optimize your shopping experience, consider tasting beforehand or knowing precisely which bottles you intend to buy, as the shop can be overwhelming without a plan.
Drink Kong
A trendy hotspot, Drink Kong features a sleek, modern design with a vibrant, energetic atmosphere. The bar specializes in creative cocktails, prepared rapidly through a batching system and final touches. The menu leans toward smooth, sweet drinks, which is perfect for those seeking approachable flavors. However, if you prefer more spirit-forward cocktails, it’s worth inquiring about the options available.
The Race Club
For a relaxed, vintage speakeasy vibe, The Race Club offers a quiet, playful environment adorned with Christmas music during our visit. The cocktail presentation was notably whimsical, and while service could be a tad slower, the variety in drink profiles—ranging from more to less spirit-forward—ensured a fun experience.
Additional notable mentions in Rome include Amaro Lobby Bar & Lounge and Jerry Thomas Spe
