Exploring Italy: A 12-Day Itinerary Through Milan, Florence, Ortisei, and Venice

Italy’s rich history, vibrant culture, and breathtaking landscapes make it a premier travel destination. Recently, I embarked on a 12-day adventure through some of Italy’s most iconic cities and regions with my husband, celebrating our 10th anniversary. This journey was our first time visiting Italy and Europe, and it exceeded all expectations. Here, I share our detailed itinerary, highlights, and travel tips to inspire your own Italian exploration.

Day 1-3: Milan – A Surprising Journey into Style and Motorsport

Our adventure began in Milan, where we stayed for three nights. Opting for Milan as our starting point was strategic: flights into Milano Malpensa (MXP) offered better deals, and we had arranged a driving experience at the famed Monza circuit for my husband. Initially, Milan was a city we underestimated, but it turned out to be a captivating blend of history, modernity, and lively neighborhoods.

Key Highlights:
Duomo di Milano: Touring the cathedral’s terraces and museum provided panoramic views and a deeper appreciation of Gothic architecture.
Monza Raceway: We took a day trip to experience high-speed thrills on the historic track—a splurge but an unforgettable highlight, especially for motorsport fans.
Vibrant Neighborhoods: Our accommodation north of the Navigli district placed us near a metro station, making city exploration effortless. The Navigli area itself buzzes at night with countless dining options, creating an authentic Milanese atmosphere.

Travel Tip: Purchasing multi-day metro passes offers a cost-effective and efficient way to explore the city’s sights and neighborhoods.

Day 4-7: Florence – Renaissance Art and Tuscan Countryside

Traveling by the high-speed Italo train, we arrived in Florence—a city that surpassed our expectations with its artistic treasures and culinary delights. We spent four nights immersing ourselves in Florence’s rich culture and taking day trips into the Tuscan countryside.

Key Highlights:
Culinary Experience: Florence’s restaurant scene is exceptional; we enjoyed delicious meals at every turn, from trattorias to fine dining.
Pasta Making Class: Engaging with a humorous instructor, we learned the art of traditional pasta, complemented by generous pours of local wine.
Tuscany Tour: One of our favorite experiences was a full-day tour with WalkAbout Tours, visiting Siena
