From Zero to 15,000 Users: How I Transformed My ChatGPT Extension with User-Centric Innovation

Approximately a year ago, I made the courageous decision to leave my full-time role as a full-stack developer to pursue an entrepreneurial venture—creating a product within the rapidly evolving AI space. Initially, I had no concrete roadmap, only a nebulous idea to develop something that would add value to ChatGPT users.

The Early Days: Facing Uncertainty and No Traction

The first months were challenging. I dedicated countless hours to development, yet the progress was slow, and tangible results—revenue, user adoption, or even clarity—remained elusive. Self-doubt crept in, prompting me to question my approach and direction.

Inspiration from the User Community

Everything shifted when I immersed myself in the OpenAI community. Reading through user feedback revealed common frustrations: missing features, cumbersome workarounds, and unmet needs. These candid insights pointed me toward a clear opportunity set—building a browser extension that fills the gaps in ChatGPT’s native experience.

The Turning Point: Building with Empathy and Responsiveness

Armed with this knowledge, I developed ChatGPT Toolbox, an extension designed to streamline workflows and enhance usability. The most significant revelation was that listening to user feedback trumps assumptions about what features are needed.

One of the earliest and most impactful features came from a Reddit user’s suggestion: the ability to run multiple prompts in sequence, akin to creating a workflow. Rather than initial assumptions about what users wanted, this real-world input guided my development.

Introducing Prompt Chaining: Streamlining Complex Tasks

In response, I built prompt chaining—a feature enabling users to queue up to 10 prompts, insert dynamic placeholders like {{topic}} or {{date}}, and execute them sequentially. Each prompt awaits the AI’s response before proceeding, effectively giving ChatGPT a structured to-do list.

The impact was immediate and quantifiable. Users reported saving hours each week. One user shared that their content creation process, which previously took 45 minutes, was reduced to under 10 minutes. Such feedback validated the effort and reaffirmed the importance of listening closely to user needs.

Additional User-Driven Features

Building on this foundation, I implemented several enhancements based on community feedback:

  • Collapsible messages: Improve navigation by allowing users to expand or collapse long threads.
  • Dynamic prompts: Save prompts with placeholders and fill them quickly during interactions using shortcuts like //.
  • Sound notifications: Audio alerts notify when ChatGPT completes its output, freeing users for multitasking.
  • Message bookmarking: Mark and instantly access key messages across chats for quick reference.

Future Directions: What’s Next?

While I can’t reveal all upcoming updates, I can share that I’m working on features enabling ChatGPT to remember context in a more personalized way—something many users have requested. Additionally, I’ve developed a similar extension for Claude, called Claude Toolbox, which already boasts over 2,000 users. It focuses on missing features like search, export, and message bookmarking within Claude’s ecosystem.

Commitment to Quality and Security

A significant milestone was receiving Chrome’s Features Badge, signifying adherence to best practices for security and user experience. Transparency about data privacy remains a priority; more details are available here.

The Impact and Community

Today, ChatGPT Toolbox enjoys over 15,000 active users across Chrome, Edge, and Chromium browsers, with a user rating of 4.6 based on 268 reviews. I continue to improve the extension with regular updates, driven by ongoing user feedback.

Final Thoughts: The Power of Starting

If I could offer one piece of advice to aspiring developers and entrepreneurs: start. The journey from idea to impact is often paved with uncertainties, but persistence and listening to your community can lead to meaningful success.

Thank you to everyone who has supported this project. Your feedback and enthusiasm motivate me to keep building and improving. To anyone sitting on an idea—take that first step. It might just change everything.

Let’s continue creating and innovating together.
