Exploring the Italian Mountains and Lakes: A Comprehensive Trip Report
Greetings!
Recently, I embarked on an enriching journey centered around Italy’s breathtaking mountains and serene lakes, complemented by a scenic detour through Switzerland. Over a span of four nights in Switzerland and eight nights exploring Italy, my travel companions and I experienced some of Europe’s most iconic landscapes, charming towns, and culinary delights. While the trip included various highlights across the region, this article will focus primarily on our Italian adventures, sharing insights and recommendations to help you craft your own memorable alpine escape.
Trip Overview
Travel Dates: Early to Mid September 2025
Travel Companions: Two couples (with myself and my wife being seasoned Italian travelers)
Starting Point & Return: Zurich, Switzerland, with a large loop through the Alps in rented vehicles
Our group consisted of seasoned travelers—my wife and I have explored most of Italy’s regions in depth, while this was the first visit for our friends. The core theme was hiking and immersing in natural beauty, with some delightful excursions into local wine and cuisine, all blessed by near-perfect weather conditions.
Italy Segment Highlights
Verona and Valpolicella – Three Nights
After departing from the Swiss town of Murren, we embarked on a scenic drive to the Veneto region through some of the most spectacular alpine passes—the Grimsel and Furka passes, followed by the St. Gotthard Pass. We then skirted Lake Como before making our way along the A4 highway—though the drive could be completed in about 5-6 hours, we deliberately took the scenic route, incorporating numerous stops for snacks, coffee, and panoramic photographs. This extended the journey to roughly 10 hours, transforming it into an adventure in itself.
Our accommodation was the Agriturismo Acinatico Wine Relais, perched atop a hillside above Fumane. The property offered warm hospitality and charming rooms, serving as a perfect base for exploring the surrounding wine country.
Over two days, we indulged in wine tastings at select Valpolicella wineries—particularly Zyme and Secondo Marco, which are boutique producers not focusing on exports but offering authentic experiences. We also explored Verona’s historic sights, including the Arena, Castelvecchio, Piazza Erbe, and Castel San Pietro. Wandering the cobbled streets and discovering small churches added to the old-world charm.
Local culinary experiences were a highlight, featuring:
