Exploring the Baltic States: A Week in Lithuania and Latvia
Traveling through the Baltic region offers a diverse tapestry of landscapes, history, and culture. Recently, I embarked on an intensive week-long journey across Lithuania and Latvia, combining spontaneous adventures with curated sightseeing. This itinerary was crafted for solo exploration and was tailored to my pace and interests, emphasizing natural beauty, historical sites, and local experiences.
Day 1: Arrival and Coastal Beginnings
I flew early from Copenhagen to Riga via a convenient codeshare with SAS/AirBaltic, connecting through Copenhagen. From Riga, I drove to Klaipėda, a charming port city on Lithuania’s coast, where I spent the night. The journey set the tone for a quick yet enriching trip, with scenic drives and the anticipation of exploring new territories.
Day 2: Curonian Spit and Nida
In the morning, I took a ferry to the Curonian Spit, renowned for its shifting dunes and pristine beaches. After exploring this unique natural formation, I continued to Nida, a quaint seaside town perfect for relaxing and soaking in the coastal atmosphere.
Day 3: Scenic Drive to Kaunas
The day involved a scenic drive along the Panemunė Road toward Kaunas, passing picturesque castles and historic churches along the route. While in Kaunas, I enjoyed local cuisine at a themed burger restaurant and strolled through the city’s boulevard, cathedral, and sculpture park.
Day 4: Cultural Immersion in Vilnius
My journey took me to Lithuania’s capital, Vilnius, via a detour to the historic Trakai Castle, famous for its lakeside setting. In Vilnius, I ascended Gediminas Castle for panoramic views and explored the old town’s cobblestone streets, churches, and vibrant neighborhoods. A visit to the Vilna Gaon Museum of Jewish History provided a profound cultural perspective through art and exhibits.
Day 5: Leisure in Vilnius and Uzupis
The day was dedicated to leisurely exploration of Užupis, a bohemian district known for its art, convivial atmosphere, and feline photography opportunities. I sampled local dishes such as cepelinai and experienced the lively nightlife.
Day 6: Cross-Border Adventures and Latvian Highlights
Driving toward Riga, I made scenic stops in Molėtai and Cēsis, exploring historic sites and natural landscapes. A brief wait at the Latvia-Lithuania border gave me a chance to observe local border procedures, including
