Celebrating a Dream Come True: My Mother’s First European Adventure at 74

Traveling internationally is a milestone that many cherish, and for my 74-year-old mother, this dream has finally become a reality. Her journey to Europe exemplifies the enduring spirit of adventure and the importance of supporting loved ones in pursuing their passions, regardless of age. In this article, I’d like to share her story, along with some insights and tips for older travelers planning their first European trip.

A Dream Deferred and Now Realized

My mother has always harbored a deep desire to explore Europe. Despite her energy and vitality—she often feels more like someone in their 50s—she’s been hesitant to embark alone due to logistical concerns. Her plan is ambitious: she’ll stay with a cousin in Germany, whom she hasn’t seen in over 50 years, and then journey through Austria, Switzerland, and a region near the French border with ancestral ties.

While we couldn’t accompany her physically—due to the demands of managing young children and the constraints of work—my happiness for her is immense. She’s determined and excited, and I’ve done everything I can to prepare her for the adventure.

Ensuring a Safe and Connected Trip

To help ensure her safety and connectivity, I set her up with a travel-friendly phone equipped with an EU eSIM, enabling her to call, message, and use WhatsApp seamlessly. Her cousin will be an invaluable resource locally, assisting with navigation and logistics, but I wanted to provide her with tools to feel empowered and independent.

Planning for Luggage: Size and Practicality

One of the logistical questions I faced pertains to luggage. My mother has a small, 24-inch (approximately 60cm) wheeled suitcase, which is slightly smaller than a typical American carry-on but still sizable. We debated whether this size would be manageable in train stations and through European streets, many of which include stairs, ramps, and uneven terrain.

In the end, I leaned toward recommending the smaller size for her main luggage, with a more compact duffel for short trips from her cousin’s house. The carry-on-sized bag (around 21 inches high) is easier to maneuver, especially if she encounters stairs or narrow passages. Given her energetic nature, I believe she can handle the medium-sized suitcase, but we also considered the trade-offs—perhaps packing fewer toiletries or bulk items—to make the journey smoother.
