Exploring Europe: A Kiwi Traveler’s Perspective on the Pros and Cons

Embarking on a six-week journey across Europe has been an enriching experience for my wife and me, and with a few more weeks ahead, I’ve taken some time to reflect on what’s stood out most. Traveling from a New Zealand vantage point offers unique insights into the continent’s diverse offerings, as well as some of its less charming aspects.

The Highlights: What Made the Trip Memorable

Accessibility and Diversity
One of the most striking aspects of traveling through Europe is how easy it is to get around. Public transportation, walking, and cycling options are plentiful and efficient. The continent’s rich tapestry of people, cultures, histories, and languages creates a vibrant environment that’s both fascinating and inspiring.

Architectural Marvels and Cultural Riches
Europe boasts some of the most breathtaking buildings and monuments I’ve ever encountered. Cities like Rome, Venice, and Seville are living museums, where every corner offers a glimpse into centuries past. The historical significance combined with striking architecture makes exploring each city a true visual feast.

Culinary Delights
Food has been a highlight of this journey. Italian cuisine, in particular, has exceeded expectations—Italian sandwiches, for example, have been exceptional. The selection of cured meats, cheeses, and regional specialties has been consistently impressive. Though I have a preference for New Zealand dairy qualities, Italy’s gelato has undoubtedly been a standout, and the authentic flavors are hard to match elsewhere.

Exceptional Spots and Hidden Gems
Seville, in particular, has captured my heart. The city’s rich history, stunning architecture, and cleanliness are impressive. Plaza de España, a public space that’s entirely free to visit, was one of the most incredible sites I’ve experienced—an absolutely surreal moment. Parque de María Luisa further enhanced the city’s charm.

Travel Challenges: Managing the Downsides

While many aspects of European travel are wonderful, there are some inconveniences worth noting.

Culinary Disappointments
Compared to New Zealand and Australia, coffee quality has been disappointing. Many cafes fall short of the standards I’m accustomed to back home, which was a bit of an adjustment.

Expensive Dining
Beef and steak meals are notably pricier than in New Zealand. Whereas a typical steak in NZ might cost around €15-20, in many European cities, the starting price is often at least €40.

Infrastructure Nuisances
The plumbing systems often lack U-bends
