Exploring Italy: A Memorable Journey from Milan to Tuscany and Beyond
Our recent European adventure spanning from September 24th to October 3rd was truly an unforgettable experience, and I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to the Reddit community for their invaluable travel tips and insights. Your shared knowledge greatly enhanced our trip. Here is a detailed recount of our journey, highlights, and some practical advice for fellow travelers planning a trip to Italy.
Arrival in Milan and a Charming Stay in Bergamo Alta
We began our trip by landing in Milan on September 24th, followed by a scenic drive to Bergamo Alta. Staying overnight in this picturesque medieval town was a highlight; its historic streets and breathtaking views left us wishing for more time to explore. Bergamo Alta’s rich architecture and ambiance made it a perfect introduction to Italy.
Hiking Adventures in the Dolomites
From September 25th to 29th, we based ourselves in Cortina d’Ampezzo, a renowned hub for outdoor enthusiasts. Although the area was buzzing with Olympic infrastructure development, navigating around was straightforward. The weather was unexpectedly cold, and our first day’s hike was challenging due to snow and ice, making for a memorable adventure. The subsequent days offered ideal hiking conditions, with some of the finest meals enjoyed at mountain rifugios along the trails. The Dolomites’ stunning landscapes and outdoor appeal are highly recommended for hiking aficionados.
Tuscan Countryside and Cultural Exploration
On September 29th, we traveled south to Tuscany, settling into an agriturismo in Greve in Chianti, centrally located between Florence and Siena. This strategic placement allowed us to explore the region effectively. Our itinerary included a bike tour on September 30th, led by a local company—biking through scenic countryside, visiting a winery for tours and tastings, followed by a delightful picnic. I highly recommend this activity for an immersive experience.
A Day in Florence
On October 1st, we drove into Florence, parking in a garage outside the ZTL zone, which simplified navigating the city’s historic center. We visited the Galleria dell’Accademia to see Michelangelo’s David and explored the Duomo complex. A walk to Piazza Signoria and along the Arno River capped the day with a memorable dinner. While Florence has countless attractions, we felt our day was sufficiently filled given our time constraints.
Siena: The Quintessential Italian City
October 2nd was dedicated to Siena. We
