Discovering Italy’s Most Beautiful Villages: A Day in the Heart of Trentino-Alto Adige

Embarking on a journey through Italy’s northernmost region, the picturesque Trentino-Alto Adige, offers travelers an immersive experience of rich history, vibrant culture, and breathtaking natural scenery. I recently had the pleasure of exploring three enchanting villages—Canale di Tenno, Rango, and San Lorenzo Dorsino—each renowned for their unique charm and listed among Italy’s most beautiful villages (Borghi più belli d’Italia). Allow me to share the highlights of my first day in this extraordinary region.

Morning Departure from Agriturismo Casa Aurora

Our adventure began with a warm farewell at Agriturismo Casa Aurora, a cozy guesthouse nestled in the Italian countryside. After a hearty breakfast and heartfelt goodbyes, we set our sights northward, crossing lakes and mountain passes to reach the Trentino-Alto Adige region. Situated between the majestic Dolomites and the Austrian Alps, this bilingual area (Italian and German speakers) is famous for its rugged landscapes, alpine traditions, and charming villages that evoke a timeless appeal.

Canale di Tenno: A Medieval Village Frozen in Time

Our first stop was Canale di Tenno, a captivating medieval village perched atop a mountainside that has earned its place among Italy’s most beautiful villages. The village’s narrow cobblestone lanes wind through stone houses and historic arches, crafted to withstand the harsh mountain weather. During winter, these arches come alive with artisan stalls during Christmas markets, transforming the village into a fairy-tale setting.

A visit to a small ethnographic museum provided an insightful glimpse into rural life of the past, showcasing traditional farming tools, woodworking implements, and household artifacts such as butter churns. These displays brought to life the agricultural heritage that shaped the local community. While enjoying a quiet moment in a local café, I had a serendipitous encounter with a group of hikers from Ottawa. Our brief exchange underscored the region’s universal appeal—connecting travelers across borders through shared curiosity and appreciation.
