Exploring Europe on a Family Road Trip: A 6-Week Journey with Hidden Gems and Small City Adventures
Embarking on an extended family vacation across Europe offers a wonderful opportunity to discover both major renowned cities and lesser-known charming towns. Our recent six-week road trip was designed with a blend of adventure, relaxation, and cultural exploration in mind. If you’re planning a similar journey and seeking authentic, less crowded destinations to break up the hustle, this guide provides insights, recommendations, and tips to enrich your experience.
Why a Family Euro Road Trip?
Our family’s unique circumstances—rooted in Serbian heritage and a desire for flexible travel—made a road trip the ideal choice. My husband’s extensive driving experience across Europe means we greatly appreciate the freedom that comes with exploring at our own pace. Our children are accustomed to long drives and prefer cars over trains, which further supports our decision. Additionally, traveling through the Balkans is budget-friendly and allows us to explore diverse landscapes without breaking the bank.
Travel Route Overview
Our journey began in Belgrade, Serbia, with plans to loop back at the end. The itinerary included a mix of capital cities, historical sites, coastal towns, and mountain escapades, with intentional pauses to enjoy local life away from tourist crowds.
- Belgrade, Serbia (7 nights)
- Budapest, Hungary (4 nights)
- Graz, Austria (3 nights)
- Ljubljana, Slovenia (1 week with day trips to Trieste)
- Pula, Croatia (4 nights)
- Zadar, Croatia (3 nights)
- Dubrovnik, Croatia (3 nights; subsequently replaced with a less touristy location)
- Budva, Montenegro (4 nights)
- Return to Belgrade, including a stopover at Tara National Park

While iconic destinations are tempting, they often come with large crowds and commercialized atmospheres. To truly enjoy a laid-back pace and authentic local culture, I recommend incorporating smaller towns and off-the-beaten-path locations. Here are some suggestions:
- Szombathely, Hungary: A charming town with Roman roots, thermal baths, and lovely parks—perfect for a relaxed day or overnight stay.
- Maribor, Slovenia: Slovenia’s second-largest city features scenic landscapes, vineyards, and a vibrant old town, ideal for a quieter experience than Ljubljana.
- Rovinj, Croatia: A picturesque coastal town offering stunning waters, narrow streets,
