Exploring Interlaken, Switzerland: A Weekend Getaway in the Swiss Alps
Embarking on a study abroad journey often leads to unforgettable adventures, and my recent weekend in Interlaken, Switzerland, was undeniably one of the highlights. Nestled in the heart of the Swiss Alps, Interlaken offers a perfect blend of natural beauty and outdoor activities, making it an ideal destination for travelers seeking both relaxation and adventure.
Journey to the Swiss Mountain Town
I began my trip with a flight from Brussels to Zurich, followed by a scenic train ride from Zurich to Interlaken. To optimize my travel budget and avoid additional fees from third-party vendors, I purchased my train tickets directly from the railway company—which proved to be a smart choice, especially in a country known for its high costs. The train ride itself was a visual feast, offering breathtaking views of rolling hills, snow-capped peaks, and charming villages along the way.
Arrival and First Impressions
Arriving at the Interlaken West train station, I was immediately struck by the vibrant atmosphere—paragliders circling overhead painted an inviting picture of the adventures awaiting us. The town exudes charm, with a laid-back vibe that encourages exploration, although most activities here are centered around outdoor pursuits.
A Weekend of Adventure
My friends and I packed our days with a variety of outdoor excursions. We hiked through the scenic trails, kayaked across pristine lakes, and—despite a fear of heights—considered paragliding. While I opted out of the latter, I can attest that it’s a popular activity among visitors and looks exhilarating from the ground. The kayaking tour was a highlight; the instructor, hailing from Belgium (where I was studying), made the experience even more memorable with warm hospitality.
Things to Consider for Future Visits
One activity I recommend for future visitors is a trip to Grindelwald for après-ski. Unfortunately, we didn’t plan far enough ahead to include this in our itinerary, and since the last lift down is typically around 3 pm, our timing didn’t align. If I return, I intend to allocate time for this warm mountain tradition, coupled with a cozy fondue and Aperol spritz to end the day.
Reflections on Interlaken
Overall, Interlaken proved to be an ideal weekend escape—beautiful mountain scenery, engaging outdoor activities, and a welcoming atmosphere. While the trip can be costly, the experience of forging
