Exploring Croatia: A Thoughtful 7-Day Coastal Road Trip Itinerary

Pre-Trip Context

The journey is part of a broader vacation that includes five days dedicated to hut-to-hut hiking in the Dolomites—a spectacular mountainscape in northern Italy. With this adventure already scheduled, the Croatian segment aims to offer a contrasting coastal experience. The travelers plan to arrive via Venice, having previously explored prominent Italian destinations, and are looking to discover Croatia’s lesser-trodden gems while avoiding overtourism.


Sample 7-Day Croatian Coastal Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Dubrovnik and Transfer to Mostar

Begin your trip arriving in Dubrovnik, known as the “Pearl of the Adriatic,” rich in medieval architecture and historic fortifications. From Dubrovnik, rent a car and embark on a scenic drive to Mostar, in Bosnia and Herzegovina—famous for its iconic Stari Most (Old Bridge). Spend a few hours exploring the old bazaar, Turkish-influenced architecture, and vibrant local culture. Stay overnight in Mostar to absorb its historical atmosphere.

Day 2: From Mostar to the Dalmatian Islands

Drive southwards towards the Croatian coast, heading to Hvar Island—or alternatively, Korčula or Trogir—for an authentic island or coastal town experience. Hvar is renowned for its lively town center, beautiful harbor, and lavender fields, but Korčula offers a medieval charm, and Trogir’s UNESCO-listed Old Town is packed with Romanesque and Renaissance architecture. Spend two nights here, enjoying local delicacies and seaside strolls.
