Embarking on a Solo Mountain Road Trip: Is Autumn the Right Time?

After resigning from my job, I now find myself with both the time and savings to pursue a long-held dream: a leisurely road trip through the mountains. My vision is simple yet fulfilling—driving my own car through scenic valleys, enjoying relaxed days with gentle hikes, savoring local coffee, and perhaps capturing some footage along the way.

However, as October approaches, I find myself at a crossroads. The shorter days and cooler temperatures raise questions about the viability of such an adventure in the Alps, Julian Alps, or Dolomites during this time of year. My plan isn’t centered on conquering high peaks but rather immersing myself in the natural beauty, relaxing in safe, cozy accommodations—think affordable saunas, pools, and hostels with drying facilities.

For those experienced with autumn mountain travel, I’d love to hear your insights:

  • Is it worthwhile to visit these regions in October, focusing on valley-rich, low-altitude experiences?
  • Do you have tips for managing the shorter evenings and cooler weather to ensure a comfortable stay?
  • Alternatively, if the mountains aren’t ideal this late in the season, what are your favorite fall road trips in Europe for a refreshing reset?
  • Or would it be more practical to consider flying to a warmer destination and skipping the car adventure altogether?

I’m currently torn between embarking on this journey now or waiting until spring when the weather might be more predictable. Your quick advice and suggestions would be greatly appreciated to help me decide the best course of action.
