Why I Still Use Both ChatGPT and Gemini even After Gemini 3.0 – Why All The Comparisons Are Practically Useless

Navigating the Landscape of AI Language Models: Why I Continue to Use Both ChatGPT and Google Gemini
In today’s rapidly evolving AI ecosystem, choosing the right language model can feel overwhelming. With advancements like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini, users are often tempted to declare a clear winner. However, after extensive hands-on experience and recent updates—including Gemini 3.0—I’ve come to the conclusion that leveraging both platforms remains essential for a nuanced, versatile AI experience. Here, I’ll share my insights into why these tools, despite their similarities, each serve unique purposes and why broad comparisons often fall short of practical value.
Familiarity and Ecosystem Integration
Being embedded within the Google ecosystem is second nature for me. I use Gmail, Google Docs, Sheets, Drive, and Google Home daily. Naturally, I’ve only utilized Gemini where it’s natively integrated—such as controlling smart homes or managing documents. While Gemini 3.0 marks a step forward from earlier versions, I’ve found that for most prompts, ChatGPT 5.1 still delivers superior responses.
Performance Updates and Personal Memory Capabilities
While Gemini 3.0 is a noticeable improvement over version 2.5, I’ve observed that its responses still lag behind ChatGPT, especially regarding complex, nuanced queries. One critical factor is ChatGPT’s robust long-term memory—its ability to recall conversational context over extended interactions enhances the user experience significantly. Transitioning entirely to Gemini would mean sacrificing this depth of conversational continuity unless Google’s recent “Personal Context” feature becomes universally available, which it hasn’t yet, even among Pro users in the U.S.
Feature Gaps and Usability Considerations
Beyond memory, specific functional limitations influence my ongoing usage:
-
Conversation Management: ChatGPT offers straightforward grouping of dialogues within projects or folders—an organizational feature absent in Gemini. Currently, grouping conversations in Gemini requires manual renaming conventions, which feels unintuitive and less efficient, especially for managing multiple ongoing discussions.
-
Model Routing and Speed: Gemini provides manual control over the model used—either a faster, albeit hallucination-prone ‘Fast’ mode (Gemini 2.5 Flash), or a slower, more thoughtful ‘Thinking’ mode (Gemini 3.0 Pro). I consistently prefer the latter despite its slower response time, aligning with my need for accuracy. ChatGPT automatically selects the appropriate model based on prompt complexity, ensuring a balanced response.
