Exploring the Wonders of the Dolomites: Could a Road Trip through Southern Germany and Austria Be Next?

Last year, our family embarked on a memorable European adventure primarily centered in Italy, and although every moment was extraordinary, it was the Dolomites that left an indelible impression on us. Our brief four-night stay in Val Gardena ignited a deep desire to revisit this awe-inspiring region. However, we’re eager to explore new destinations and experiences, which has led us to consider a scenic road trip through Southern Germany and Austria, with a possible return visit to the Eastern Dolomites.

In planning this journey, our focus is on capturing the region’s breathtaking scenery, exploring rich historical architecture, indulging in regional cuisine, and immersing ourselves in local culture—all while accommodating the needs of our family with young children. Below, I outline our tentative itinerary and would greatly appreciate any insights or recommendations to enhance our plans.

Travel Priorities:

  • Spectacular Natural Beauty: We seek vistas that include majestic mountains, serene lakes, flowing rivers, and rolling hills, appreciating variety in landscapes.

  • Architectural and Historical Charm: Our interest lies in charming villages, castles, palaces, and churches that complement the scenic backdrop, enriching our cultural experience.

  • Culinary Delights: We love exploring regional foods—such as knödel, spinatspätzle, Tyrolean pizza, Kaiserschmarrn, polenta, and strudel—and are keen to discover authentic local dining spots.

  • Cultural Atmosphere & Vibe: We prefer a relaxed pace, soaking in the ambiance of each destination without rushing from one attraction to another.

  • Practical Considerations: Traveling with our two young children (ages 4 and 1.5), we prioritize manageable walks (under 1 hour) and accessible transportation, especially cable car systems servicing scenic viewpoints (e.g., Alp de Siusi, Seceda). Given our children’s ages, we anticipate visiting 1-2 attractions per day, ensuring a comfortable experience for all.

Proposed Itinerary Overview:

  1. Munich (3 nights): Our journey begins at Munich Airport, where we plan to rest after our flight and explore a few city sights before renting a car and heading south.

  2. Romantic Road (2 nights): Expecting to stay in Rothenburg ob der Tauber or nearby, savoring the medieval charm without rushing to see every site.

  3. Füssen (2 nights): A brief stop to admire Neusch
