Despite Concerns Over Job Automation, AI Continues to Make a Meaningful Impact in the Photography Industry

In recent years, the discourse surrounding artificial intelligence (AI) has been dominated by concerns over job security and automation replacing human roles. These anxieties are particularly prevalent across creative industries, where the fear that AI might diminish the human touch is widespread. However, a closer look at recent data reveals a more nuanced picture—one in which AI is not only supplementing, but actively enhancing, the work of photographers around the world.

AI’s Role in Streamlining Photography Workflows

One of the leading AI-driven solutions in photography, Aftershoot, processed an astonishing 5.4 billion images in 2024. Their data indicates that 4.4 billion images were culled, while 1.05 billion received edits, resulting in significant time savings for photographers. In fact, the company estimates that their AI technology has collectively saved photographers approximately 13 million hours this year alone.

Financially, this translates into considerable savings: with a cost of approximately 11 cents per edited photo, Aftershoot’s user base—comprising around 200,000 photographers—has collectively saved an estimated AU$117 million. These figures underscore AI’s capacity to automate mundane tasks, freeing professionals to focus on more creative and strategic aspects of their work.

Adoption and Perception of AI in Photography

Recent surveys shed light on how photographers are embracing AI. Zenfolio’s 2024 survey reports that only about 13% of photographers do not utilize AI in their workflows. Conversely, over 32% integrate AI regularly, and more than half—53%—use it as needed. This widespread adoption is further reflected in perception: only 11.6% of respondents view AI negatively, while 31.8% see it positively, and a majority—56.6%—maintain a neutral stance.

Moreover, a survey of 1,000 photographers who have adopted AI highlights its positive impact on work-life balance. A striking 81% of respondents reported that AI tools helped restore their personal and professional equilibrium, emphasizing the industry’s shift toward more efficient and sustainable workflows.

Changing Client Expectations and Industry Dynamics

The influence of AI extends beyond photographers to client relationships. Many professionals report that client expectations for turnaround times have tightened significantly. Specifically, 54% of photographers note that clients now expect delivery within two weeks, while 13% anticipate work within just 48 hours.
