Exploring Italy: An In-Depth Journey through Rome and Florence – November 2025

Introduction

Embarking on a trip through Italy’s historic cities offers endless wonder and discovery. Having recently returned from a two-week adventure in Rome and Florence, I’m excited to share a comprehensive account of our journey—covering logistics, attractions, dining, and practical insights. Whether planning your own visit or simply dreaming of Italy, I hope this detailed report provides valuable guidance and inspiration.

About Our Travel Perspective

We are a couple in our early thirties from the United States, with extensive experience traveling within North America and beyond. While we have dabbled in European trips over the years, our recent visit was our first in approximately a decade, and our first time exploring these iconic Italian cities. Our travels typically lean toward outdoor activities, but this trip was city-focused, emphasizing cultural sights, cuisine, and local ambiance.

Our interests include savoring regional foods and coffees, strolling through lively streets and serene gardens, visiting museums, and exploring shops—especially those offering unique leather goods and perfumes. We’re not hardcore history buffs but enjoy learning about art and culture without the pressure of exhaustive sightseeing. Balancing comfort with affordability guided our planning, aiming to experience the highlights while avoiding overly touristy crowds where possible.

Trip Overview

Our itinerary was designed to maximize exploration while allowing time for leisurely enjoyment. Here’s a broad outline:

  • Days 1-4: Rome
Arrival in the evening; sightseeing included iconic sites like Trevi Fountain, Pantheon, Piazza Navona, Castel Sant’Angelo, the Spanish Steps, and the Colosseum complex. Rainy weather prompted visits to indoor attractions such as the Domus Romane and Leonardo da Vinci Museum.

  • Day 5: Travel to Florence
Morning laundry and a scenic train ride, followed by a food tour that introduced us to local flavors and neighborhoods.

  • Days 6-8: Florence
Highlights included climbing the Duomo’s dome, visiting the Accademia Gallery, exploring markets and gardens, and embarking on a full-day Chianti wine tour.

  • Day 9: Return to Rome & Departure Prep
Traveling back to Rome in the afternoon, we visited additional sites like the Baths of Diocletian and the National Roman Museum, savoring our last Italian dinner before heading home.

  • Day 10: Departure
