Traveling in Europe for the First Time: Practical Tips on Luggage and Train Storage
Embarking on a European trip for the first time can be both exciting and challenging, especially when it comes to managing luggage and navigating train travel. Recently, my wife and I spent 15 memorable days exploring Germany and neighboring countries, and I wanted to share some insights and tips from our experience to help fellow travelers prepare for their journeys.
Our Journey Overview
We began our adventure arriving in Munich, then traveled by train to Zurich, Strasbourg, Stuttgart, and finally back to Munich. Throughout our trip, we each packed a larger suitcase, measuring just under 62 linear inches and weighing approximately 50 pounds, complemented by backpacks. Anticipating colder weather, we packed layers and winter clothing; however, the weather turned out to be milder than expected, meaning we could have managed with medium-sized luggage. Nonetheless, packing for flexibility and preparedness proved worthwhile, eliminating the need to buy additional clothing abroad.
Luggage Choices and Packing Strategy
Choosing the right luggage is crucial, particularly on European trains where space can vary. In our case, larger suitcases gave us ample room, but they also raised questions about storage options on trains. We opted for substantial luggage to accommodate all essentials comfortably, but this decision made me particularly conscious of how to manage space efficiently.
Understanding Train Storage and Luggage Placement
An important concern I had was how to fit larger suitcases onto European trains. As a visual learner, I struggled to find clear images or examples of luggage racks in advance. To aid future travelers, I decided to document our experience with photos of luggage storage on trains we boarded.
Our first two pictures showcase the ride from Stuttgart to Munich aboard a Deutsche Bahn ICE train, booked through their app. The third image captures our journey from Zurich to Strasbourg on an EC train via the SBB app.
On the ICE train, our suitcase extended beyond the luggage rack, positioned at an angle. Despite this, it remained stable throughout the journey, even during stops, without shifting or causing inconvenience. The luggage racks on these trains are robust and designed to support considerable weight, accommodating larger suitcases securely. During peak travel seasons, such as the Christmas markets, trains were at medium capacity, and we found ample space and cordial approval from train staff regarding our luggage placement.
