Harnessing Technology for Support: How ChatGPT Aids My Communication as Someone Living with MS
In online communities dedicated to Multiple Sclerosis (MS), diverse experiences and perspectives are shared to foster mutual understanding and support. Recently, I observed some discussions where individuals were criticized or even stigmatized for utilizing tools like ChatGPT to assist in composing their posts. I would like to take this opportunity to shed light on the role such technology can play, especially for those of us navigating life with MS.
Living with MS presents unique challenges, including difficulties with communication, speech, and cognitive functions. For many of us, adaptive tools and assistive technologies are essential components of our daily lives, helping us participate actively both online and offline. ChatGPT, for instance, can serve as a valuable aid in expressing thoughts clearly, organizing ideas, or overcoming language barriers when typing or formulating responses.
It’s important to recognize that using AI-powered tools is not a sign of weakness or a lack of authenticity; rather, it is a strategic choice that empowers individuals with disabilities to engage more effectively. These technologies are part of a broader spectrum of assistive devices and applications designed to enhance our quality of life and foster meaningful communication.
Our community thrives on empathy and understanding. Embracing the use of such tools encourages inclusivity and acknowledges the diverse ways in which people adapt to their circumstances. If someone finds that ChatGPT or similar technologies help them to communicate more confidently, it is a positive step towards greater participation and connection.
Thank you for your understanding and support in recognizing the value of assistive technologies in our journeys. Let’s continue to foster a respectful and inclusive environment where everyone feels empowered to communicate in the ways that work best for them.
