Is ChatGPT More Competent Than Most Humans in Your Personal and Professional Life?

In recent years, advancements in artificial intelligence, particularly large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT, have revolutionized the way we process information, automate tasks, and solve problems. But this progress also prompts a provocative question: Could AI models now outperform many humans in our daily interactions and work-related tasks?

A Reflection on Human Awareness of AI Capabilities

It’s worth noting that not everyone is equally aware of or open to embracing these technological changes. For instance, I have a family member—an uncle—who knows about GPT but dismisses it cynically, reflecting a common human tendency to resist change or dismiss unfamiliar technology. This skepticism often comes from a closed mindset, unwilling to see the transformative potential of AI.

The Rapid Advancement of LLMs

I first discovered GPT in 2022, and since then, I’ve watched the technology evolve at an astonishing pace. The growth has been nearly exponential—initially characterized by a steep curve that now seems to plateau into an “L curve,” indicating a nearing plateau of capabilities but still impressive progress.

In 2022, GPT struggled with accepting files or parsing poorly formatted documents. Fast forward to 2026, and the same models can now generate complex Excel macro books—over 25 tabs—that can replace traditional CPA functions for filing taxes. In fact, I used GPT to analyze, understand, and recreate a detailed Excel macro book that I previously used for client filings. The AI dissected hundreds of formulas flawlessly, restructured the workbook, and made necessary modifications—all within 15 minutes. I manually verified the work, line by line, and confirmed it was error-free.

The Implications for Human Expertise

Compare this to hiring an accounting student earning over $85,000 a year from a less-than-prestigious university. Training such a new hire to reach the proficiency of an AI-powered macro book would take years of experience and mentorship, assuming they aren’t already a “super nerd” Excel wizard. Logic suggests that in many cases, AI can outperform human professionals in tasks that require pattern recognition, data analysis, and complex computations—doing so faster, cheaper, and often more accurately.

A Sense of Isolation in the Real World

This realization leads to a curious feeling of detachment. When I step outside into the “real world,” sometimes I feel like one of the few individuals aware of how much AI has already surpassed human performance in specific domains. It’s a humbling thought that I might be among the few who recognize the extent of this technological shift—and that I might be a “lemming” myself, with much to learn.

Conclusion: The New Reality

Are we nearing a point where AI models like ChatGPT are more competent than most humans in our personal and professional lives? Evidence suggests that in many areas—such as data processing, analysis, and even creative tasks—AI is already outperforming human counterparts. Embracing this change, rather than resisting it, could be key to staying ahead and leveraging AI’s full potential.
