Exploring Europe: Final Leg of a 3-Month Journey from Wengen to Vienna
Embarking on an extended European adventure offers a unique opportunity to immerse oneself in diverse cultures, histories, and landscapes. As a travel enthusiast from Australia planning a 12-week trip from mid-October to late December 2026, I’ve been mapping out an itinerary that balances iconic cities with scenic destinations. Having secured most accommodations with flexible cancellation policies, I now turn my attention to optimizing the last two weeks of my journey.
Preliminary Itinerary Overview
Before delving into the final stage, here’s a snapshot of the initial northern and central European destinations I will visit:
- London
- Normandy
- Paris
- Amsterdam
- Barcelona
- Madrid
- Granada
- Seville
- Rome
- Florence
- Venice
- Lucerne
The focus of this article centers on the concluding segment of my trip, scheduled from December 14th onward, where I plan to explore Wengen, Salzburg, Prague, and Vienna.
Proposed Final Destination Sequence
My current itinerary for the last two weeks is as follows:
- Wengen: 3 nights
- Salzburg: 3 nights
- Prague: 3 nights
- Vienna: 4 nights
This route offers a scenic journey through the Alps, charming Austrian cities, and historic Czech landmarks. My hope is to experience a festive Christmas atmosphere in Vienna, where I have accommodations booked from December 23rd to 27th.
Travel Considerations and Optimization
One challenge I’ve noted is the somewhat backtracking nature of this route. The sequence (Salzburg → Prague → Vienna) involves traversing through Vienna, which is on the way from Salzburg to Prague, potentially leading to inefficient travel. Given this, I’m seeking advice on how to refine this itinerary.
Would it be more practical to adjust the sequence to minimize transit times? For example, starting with Salzburg, then heading directly to Prague, and concluding with Vienna? Alternatively, are there other logistical arrangements or sightseeing opportunities that could enhance this part of the trip?
Flexibility and Planning
Since all accommodations are booked with free cancellation options, I am open to making adjustments based on suggestions and travel insights. My primary goal is to maximize enjoyment and cultural experience while maintaining a comfortable and manageable schedule.
I look forward to hearing the community’s thoughts, whether about route optimization, holiday celebrations in Vienna, or other travel tips for this region
