Exploring Belgium’s Charm: A Springtime Getaway in Flanders

Belgium, with its rich history, diverse architecture, and vibrant cities, remains a favorite destination year-round. During a memorable four-day Easter weekend, I had the pleasure of exploring northern and eastern Flanders, immersing myself in the region’s hidden gems and well-known spots. Whether you’re a seasoned traveler or planning your first visit, Belgium offers something for everyone, and this trip provided a perfect snapshot of its multifaceted appeal.

Leuven: An Under-the-Radar Delight

My journey began in the lively university city of Leuven, a place that truly captivated me. The first part of my visit included exploring the Botanical Garden—an underrated treasure that surprisingly isn’t highlighted in many guidebooks. Its serene pathways and lush plant collections make it an ideal spot for nature lovers seeking tranquility away from the bustling city. Adjacent to this, the Groot Begijnhof, a historic béguinage now serving as student housing, offers a glimpse into Leuven’s storied past and its enduring academic spirit. I couldn’t help but envy students lucky enough to study in such an inspiring environment.

Antwerp: A City of Contrasts

Next, I spent time in Antwerp, a dynamic urban hub renowned for its fashion, art, and port activities. While I personally didn’t find Antwerp’s vibe entirely aligned with my preferences, a highlight was visiting the Royal Museum of Fine Arts (KMSKA). The museum houses masterpieces by Rubens and other Flemish greats, making it well worth the visit for art enthusiasts. Antwerp’s large, bustling atmosphere offers plenty of dining and entertainment options—ideal for travelers seeking lively city experiences.

Lier: The Charming “Mini-Bruges”

On the return from Leuven to Antwerp, I made a brief stop in Lier, a picturesque town often called a miniature version of Bruges. Its historic center, with well-preserved buildings and scenic canals, makes it a perfect day-trip destination. In just a few hours, I appreciated its quiet beauty and old-world charm—an ideal spot for a relaxed exploration.

Revisiting Ghent: A Cultural Hotspot

I revisited Ghent on Easter Sunday, a city that continues to enchant visitors with its vibrant atmosphere. Highlights included Saint Bavo’s Abbey, which I had not visited previously. Located just east of the city center near Dampoort station, the Abbey offers free entry and a tranquil setting to appreciate Gothic architecture and religious
