Exploring Southern France and Beyond: A Solo European Adventure in August

Planning a European trip can be both exciting and overwhelming—especially during peak summer months. Recently, I embarked on organizing a journey starting in Southern France, specifically around the Beziers area, to celebrate my father’s milestone birthday. With his 80th coming up in August, he chose a memorable barge trip through the scenic waterways of Southern France, and I decided to extend my visit by two weeks afterward.

My journey begins in Barcelona, where I will arrive by plane before taking a train into France. En route to the barge, I plan to make a stop in Narbonne, a charming town steeped in history and known for its Roman roots. Following the barge experience, I intend to spend four days exploring Lyon, a city renowned for its rich culinary scene and vibrant history.

After Lyon, I’m eager to find a cooler, more serene destination that aligns with my interests: exceptional food, fine wines, historical sites, nature, and quaint towns with character. I appreciate smaller, cozy towns that exude history and charm—without needing a nightlife scene.

Considering Next Steps: France, Switzerland, or Poland?

My previous travel experiences have primarily been limited to Paris within France, and I haven’t yet explored Switzerland. Interestingly, I had originally planned to visit Krakow, Poland, this year before my father’s trip was arranged.
