Exploring the Majestic Dolomites and Relaxing at Lake Garda: A Family Adventure

Embarking on a memorable journey through Northern Italy, our recent trip combined the breathtaking beauty of the Dolomites with a tranquil retreat at Lake Garda. Traveling with my parents and partner, we began our adventure by flying into Milan Bergamo Airport on July 13th, ready to experience some of Italy’s most iconic landscapes.

Discovering the Dolomites: From Cortina to Urtijëi

Our itinerary initially took us to the charming town of Cortina d’Ampezzo, where we stayed for five nights. Known as a hub for outdoor enthusiasts, Cortina served as the perfect base to explore the rugged peaks and scenic trails of the Dolomites. We set out to hike several renowned peaks, immersing ourselves in the dramatic alpine scenery and crisp mountain air.

Following our stay in Cortina, we traveled to Urtijëi (or Ortisei), a picturesque comune nestled in the Val Gardena valley. Over the course of four days, we explored the other side of the Dolomites, discovering new trails and soaking in the stunning vistas that this less-trafficked area offers. The region’s unique blend of natural beauty and cultural charm made each hike a memorable experience.

Relaxing at Lake Garda: A Perfect Finale

After our mountain excursions, we drove towards Lake Garda to unwind and enjoy some leisure time. Spending the last six days of our trip by the lake provided a perfect balance to our active mountain adventures. Lake Garda’s tranquil waters, charming lakeside towns, and scenic vineyards offered ample opportunities for relaxation, water activities, and exploring local cuisine before our journey home from Milan Bergamo.

Planning Tips and Recommendations

As I reflect on our trip, I realize that some aspects of the planning could have been more streamlined. For fellow travelers considering a similar itinerary, here are a few tips:

  • Car Parking: Securing parking spots in popular towns like Cortina and Urtijëi can be challenging, especially during peak season. I recommend researching and booking parking in advance whenever possible or exploring local park-and-ride options.

  • Hiking Schedules: Organizing hikes around weather conditions and trail difficulty is essential. It’s advisable to plan your hikes with flexible dates, especially in the mountains where weather can change rapidly.

  • Lake Garda Recommendations: For lakeside activities, consider visiting towns like Malcesine, Sirm
