Planning a European getaway can be both exciting and challenging, especially when balancing multiple beautiful destinations. Recently, my wife and I, both in our mid-20s, found ourselves contemplating whether to extend our upcoming Italian vacation to include Sardinia alongside our planned week in the Amalfi Coast, or to dedicate separate trips to each region.

Our Current Itinerary and Flexibility

We have already booked eight nights in Praiano on the Amalfi Coast from September 21 to 29. However, our flights are not yet finalized, leaving our schedule open for adjustments. The key decision revolves around adding seven nights in northeastern Sardinia before our Amalfi stay—specifically from September 14 to 21—or focusing solely on Amalfi as a standalone experience.

Interests and Preferences

My passion is for dramatic natural landscapes—where mountains meet the sea, perfect for hiking and exploration. I thrive on immersing myself in scenic terrains and discovering hidden gems. Conversely, my wife prefers relaxing on beaches, enjoying swimming in clear waters akin to those found in the Dominican Republic or Panama City Beach. Due to this difference, Sardinia’s inviting beaches make it an appealing option for us both.

Proposed Itinerary for Sardinia

If we choose to include Sardinia, our tentative plan involves basing ourselves either in Cannigione or Palau. From there, we’d visit the renowned Costa Smeralda beaches, embark on a full-day boat trip to the La Maddalena archipelago, and explore the striking granite formations at Capo Testa. Additionally, I’ve considered splitting the week—perhaps spending four days in Sardinia and then three more in Cala Gonone, exploring the Baunei coast’s rugged beauty.

Cost Considerations

The financial aspect is significant. Combining Amalfi and Sardinia is estimated to cost approximately $12,500 to $13,000, accounting for three round-trip flights, two accommodations, and a rental car. In comparison, a week solely in Amalfi might be closer to $7,500 with direct flights. This results in an additional $5,500 for the combined trip, raising questions about whether the extra expense is justified.

Balancing Travel Enjoyment and Rest

One concern is that the Amalfi itinerary feels quite full—it’s vibrant and adventure-filled, but also potentially exhausting. We’re seeking a harmonious balance between exploration and relaxation.
