Exploring Northern Europe by Public Transportation: A 12-Day Scandinavian Odyssey

Day 1-2: Oslo to Hemsedal – Mountain Adventures Begin
Arriving late in Oslo, I embarked on an early morning bus to Hemsedal, a charming ski town renowned for its stunning scenery and excellent local transportation connecting to its resorts. Spending two days on the slopes, I enjoyed pristine powder and clear weather. Though the mountain crowds were noticeable, wait times never exceeded ten minutes. The town’s cozy cafes provided the perfect spot for coffee and remote work while awaiting the bus to Flam.

Day 3: Scenic Transit to Flam
The bus journey to Flam was impressively smooth, even amidst a snowstorm, showcasing Norway’s reliable public transit infrastructure.

Day 4-5: Exploring Flam and the Fjords
Off-peak travel meant Flam was pleasantly uncrowded, allowing for serene snowshoe hikes through forested landscapes. I also experienced the scenic Flam Railway—an engineering marvel traversing challenging mountainous terrain in an almost empty carriage. The spectacular winter vistas of the fjords left a lasting impression.

Day 6: Fjord Cruise to Gudvangen and Voss
A ferry ride through the fjords revealed breathtaking winter scenery. Upon reaching Gudvangen, I connected to a bus heading to Voss, followed by a straightforward train ride to Bergen.

Day 7-8: Bergen – Coastal Charm and Culture
Bergen greeted me with milder, rainier weather, a stark contrast to the snowy mountains. The city was tranquil at this time of year, making it ideal for exploring scenic walking trails accessible from the funicular. A guided walking tour offered insights into Bergen’s history and culture, complemented by sampling local specialties such as fish cakes.

Day 9: Overnight Ferry to Copenhagen
Embarking on a spacious overnight ferry from Bergen to Copenhagen, I appreciated the comfortable cabins—though I noted the €7 price for a latte! The voyage provided a restful transition from Norway’s rugged landscapes to Denmark’s vibrant cityscape.
