Discovering Carpi: An Unexpected Gem Near Modena

During a recent trip to Modena in April, I found myself with an extra day to explore beyond the city’s renowned culinary and architectural highlights. With no particular plan in mind, I decided to take a spontaneous 20-minute train ride to the nearby town of Carpi—an uncharted destination for me.

To my delight, Carpi proved to be a compelling destination that exceeded all expectations. The town boasts one of Italy’s longest Renaissance-era piazzas, a stunning basilica showcasing architectural elegance, and an inviting atmosphere with few tourists to disrupt the experience. As a photographer, I was particularly captivated by the scenic vistas and historic charm, capturing a variety of remarkable shots that I’ll cherish.

Timing was particularly favorable; visiting in April meant the weather was pleasantly mild, and the town wasn’t overwhelmed by crowds. Of course, the local cuisine lived up to high standards, offering delicious flavors that complemented the picturesque setting beautifully.

It’s somewhat surprising that Carpi isn’t more widely known or frequented by travelers. Its blend of history, architecture, and tranquility presents a compelling case for a visit. If you’ve already been or are considering exploring this hidden Italian treasure, I’d love to hear your experiences.
