Exploring Europe with Family: A Revised Travel Itinerary from Edinburgh to Strasbourg and London

Planning a family European adventure can be both exciting and overwhelming, especially when trying to balance sightseeing, relaxation, and travel logistics. Recently, I shared an initial itinerary for a trip spanning from early August to late August, covering Edinburgh, Strasbourg, and London. Travel Overview

  • Departure and return will be via London Heathrow Airport (LHR), utilizing credit card reward points for transfers and accommodations.
  • The trip runs from the night of August 3rd through the morning of August 26th.
  • We are traveling as a family, including children aged 15, 19, and 20.

Itinerary Highlights

August 3-4: Initial Flight and Arrival in Edinburgh

  • Depart from JFK to London Heathrow on August 3rd, followed by a connecting flight to Edinburgh (EDI).
  • Early August 4th: Arrival in Edinburgh, Scotland.
  • Settle in and acclimate to the time change and surroundings.

August 4-7: Discovering Edinburgh

  • Spend three days exploring the historic city.
  • Recommended activities include touring Edinburgh Castle, strolling along the Royal Mile, visiting local museums, and enjoying city parks.
  • Optionally, venture into nearby attractions such as Arthur’s Seat or Holyrood Palace.

August 7-14: Strasbourg and Surroundings

  • Fly from Edinburgh to Frankfurt, then take a train to Strasbourg, France.
  • Consider renting a car for flexibility during this segment.
  • Activities include:
  • Two days dedicated to Europa Park, one of Europe’s premier amusement parks.
  • A day exploring Strasbourg’s charming old town, its Gothic cathedral, and canals.
  • Potential day trips to Stuttgart (for sightseeing and family activities), Colmar (a picturesque Alsace town), the Black Forest, or Baden-Baden, depending on our interests and mood.
  • Incorporate a couple of days for relaxation and spontaneous sightseeing.

August 14-26: London Exploration

  • Travel from Strasbourg to London, likely via flight or train.
  • The London leg offers a flexible schedule:
  • Possible day trips to Windsor, Oxford, or Brighton.
  • Enjoy classic tourist attractions such as the British Museum
