Exploring Cultural Inspiration in Oracle Card Design: Creating a Tarot-Inspired Card from Brazil’s Jogo do Bicho with ChatGPT

In the evolving landscape of digital art and storytelling, integrating traditional cultural motifs into modern creative projects offers a unique and meaningful approach. Recently, I embarked on a personal journey to develop an oracle card deck inspired by the rich cultural tapestry of Brazil, leveraging the capabilities of ChatGPT to bring this vision to life.

The Cultural Foundation: Jogo do Bicho

My project draws inspiration from the Brazilian “Jogo do Bicho” (literally “Animal Game”), a traditional lottery-style game that associates each of 25 animals with specific numbers. Although primarily a form of entertainment, Jogo do Bicho holds deep cultural significance and folklore in Brazil, symbolizing luck, chance, and the connection between humans and nature.

Transforming Tradition into Archetypes

Rather than simply replicating the game, I envisioned each animal as embodying an archetype—a universal symbol representing a facet of human experience. This approach resonates with Tarot cards, which serve as symbolic mirrors of our inner worlds. The objective was to craft a personalized oracle deck that weaves together cultural roots, universal symbolism, and contemporary artistic expression.

Introducing Card 01: The Traveler (O Viajante)

The first card in this series is titled “The Traveler” (or “O Viajante” in Portuguese), represented by the ostrich, which is animal number one in the Jogo do Bicho.

Visual Composition and Symbolism

The artwork depicts an ostrich standing at a crossroads, symbolizing a moment of choice and transition. One path leads into a sheltered forest, offering a sense of safety and familiarity, while the other opens up to a distant horizon, evoking adventure, possibility, and the unknown. Next to the ostrich, a sign reads “FIQUE” (“STAY” in Portuguese), embodying themes of comfort, belonging, and the pull of roots versus the desire for exploration.
